What You Need to Know About Hemorrhoid Surgery
The last resort for most hemorrhoid sufferers to cure their problem is hemorrhoid surgery, otherwise known as hemorrhoidectomy. It is the term most medical professionals use. This is a surgical procedure which usually requires anesthesia. Oftentimes the patient is being sedated and does not experience any pain. However, most people only choose this when they do not see any result from other alternative treatments like herbal, homeopathic or topical creams and ointments. There are cases when surgery is not needed because alternative options are successful. These include changes in diet, topical creams and warm sitz baths which can relief symptoms and eventually get rid of the hemorrhoids.
But when all of these fail, surgery is recommended. Many people do not want this because it involves stitches. The vein inside the hemorrhoid is then tied to prevent bleeding when the hemorrhoid is removed. After removal, the wound is closed or can be left open. It is then covered with a medicated gauze. The stitches will then dissolve on their own after some time. The doctor will perform a procedure where a scalpel is used or a more modern method which uses laser or electricity. Another method uses some sort of a stapling device to remove the tissue and to close the opening of the wound. This method does not use incision for removal. What it does it to staple back the tissue to the anal canal. These methods have side effects such as infection and bleeding as well as reaction to the anesthesia. Therefore, it is important to have a proper consultation with a doctor before any procedure is done. During the consultation, patients should inform the doctor of any medication you are taking, or if you are suffering from any other condition and if you are pregnant.
However, smaller sized hemorrhoids do not usually require surgery. Rubber band litigation is often used for this as well as infrared coagulation or cyrotherapy. Large and severe ones require surgical procedure because of its advanced nature. Also, non-surgical procedures often do not have any effect on them. Therefore, surgery is needed to remove the hemorrhoids.
